Desire2Learn has several tools built in to help facilitate interaction and engagement. These tools can be used to help increase student interaction and engagement with watchtower, the instructor, and the content of the course. Whether you teach a fully face-to-face course, have a blended or hybrid schedule, or you teach a fully online course, D2L has tools that can help facilitate greater interaction and engagement.
Below is the Power Point used during the workshop.
If I were to recommend any one individual resource on how to increase interaction and engagement in your classes I would recommend the article Mastering Online Discussion Facilitation(click link to download article). This article is a 15 page document with several pages on discussion board pedagogy and literally hundreds of ideas for how you can use discussions in your classroom.
Also, I would recommend the article Sage, guide or ghost? The effect of instructor intervention on student participation in online discussion forums (click link to download article). This article presents research findings about how different instructor facilitation techniques impact students learning and perceptions. While this article is aimed at only discussion board use, the Sage, Guide, or Ghost framework to help you decide how you want to use technology in your course.
